Snowmageddon Survival Guide For Dogs

Snow no, here we go again! We’ve got another winter storm heading our way with forecasts calling for heavy snow, strong winds, and even possible whiteout conditions – YIKES!

Tails N Whiskers Pet Services knows that the winter can be tough on our pets, especially the pups. Storms like these don’t just disrupt travel, but they also can affect potty routines, exercise, and even safety. Let us help you get prepped to make it through with these helpful tips to stay warm, safe and keep everyone’s sanity!

Before the storm hits, make sure you’re all stocked up on essentials. Check your food supply, medications and pet safe salt reserves and gather whatever is needed. Don’t forget to grab some extra towels for drying off snowy paws, and keep a few water bottles handy – pipes can freeze, and having fresh water drinking water is key for the whole family!

Prepping your yard or bathroom break areas is always helpful; shovel a path for the pups early and often. Try to identify one consistent bathroom area to keep it manageable, and check for snow drifts in fenced areas – they can create accidental escape ramps! Some folks even like to lay down a tarp or other protective cover in an area to make sure that even in the worst weather, a sniffy, grassy space is at the ready.

Wind and heavy snow can spook dogs, and storms like nor’easters often yield increased lost-dog cases. Make sure collars are on and legible, microchip information is up to date, and GPS collars are charged up.

With snowfall rates of up to 2+ inches an hour and wind gusts of 40mph, keep bathroom outings short and purposeful. Watch for lifted paws, a sign that it’s gotten too cold and wet for your pup and it’s time to head back inside and try again later. Coats and other outerwear is key to keep short-haired, small and senior breeds warm and try to avoid any icy surfaces. Dogs are just like us; one slip and it’s off to the ER!

Ice melt is extremely harmful if not pet-safe, and can cause burns on paws and GI upset if licked. Wipe paws thoroughly after every walk, and consider booties for especially sensitive dogs.

Of course, cabin fever is REAL, especially if you have a high-energy pup! Indoor activities like snuffle mats, scatter feeding, and frozen Kongs can help pass the time. Snow days are awesome days to take advantage of bonding time with indoor training, scent work, and hide-and-seek games!

Winter storms can feel magical; the world slows down for a while and play and cuddle time is encouraged. Your pets depend on you for their health and safety during these events, and with a little preparation, a stressful storm can turn into a fun and memorable day of bonding!
